Highlights
Kathmandu Durbar Square
Sightseeing tour of Kathmandu Durbar Square, with its old temples and palaces, epitomizes the religious and cultural life of the people. Here, the kings of Nepal are crowned and solemnized. Interesting things for visitors to see are Taleju temple, gigantic figure of Kalbhairav (the god of destruction), Basantapur Durbar, and Temple of Kumari (living goddess).
Patan Durbar Square – The square boasts of many famous sites and unique architecture. Krishna Mandir in the Patan Durbar Square was built to honor an incarnation of Vishnu. Krishna was a favourite among the “Gopini” (cowgirls). His temple is the best example of stone architecture in the World. Scenes from the Mahabharat, Asia’s greatest mythological war, are carved on the temple’s walls. The streets in the Patan Durbar Square area are home to traditional artists and sculptors. Many more temples are dedicated to Ganesh (the elephant-headed god), Shiva, Narsingha & Taleju.
Bhaktapur Durbar Square – Bhaktapur which means the ‘city of devotees’ is a home of medieval art and architecture. Pottery and weaving are its traditional industries.
Boudhanath (Little Tibet) – UNESCO World Heritage Site – Boudhanath is among the largest stupas in South Asia, and it has become the focal point of Tibetan Buddhism in Nepal. The white mound looms 36 meters overhead. The stupa is located on the ancient trade route to Tibet, and the Tibetan merchants have rested and offered prayers here for many centuries. In the 1950s many refugees entered Nepal from Tibet and many have also decided to live around Boudhanath. Thus, the “Little Tibet” of Nepal was born. This “Little Tibet” is still the best place in the Valley to observe Tibetan lifestyle. Monks are seen walking about in their maroon robes. The Tibetans also walk with their prayer wheels in their hands, and the rituals of prostration are presented to the Buddha as worshippers circumambulate the stupa on their hands and knees, bowing down to their lord.
Royal Chitwan National Park (RCNP) – This is one of Nepal’s largest forest reserve with a wide range of wildlife; the great “One Horned Rhinoceros”, several species of deer, sloth bear, leopard, wild boar, fresh water dolphin, crocodile, more than 350 species of birds and the elusive Royal Bengal Tiger. This is one of the best-managed national parks in the world, which covers an area of 1040 sq. km. It is situated 160 km southwest of Kathmandu. RCNP is the last home for about 250 remaining endangered Asian One-Horned Rhinoceroes.
Pokhara Valley – Pokhara valley is one of the most picturesque spot of Nepal. The beauty of Pokhara is enhanced by its lovely lakes, which have their source in the glacial region of the Annapurna range of the Himalayas. Situated 200 KM west of Kathmandu (827 meter above sea level), Pokhara offers a magnificent view of Dhaulagiri, Machapuchre (Fishtail), 5 peaks of Annapurna and many more. Pokhara is believed to be the only place in the world to provide such dramatic views in a sub-tropical setting.
Sarankot – One of the most enjoyable short hiking to Sarankot in Pokhara. Enjoy the magnificent view of Fishtail and Annapurna range peaks (the most popular trekking route apart from Everest base camp) on clear days
